My Mustang has instrument gas, oil, amp, and temp gauges. I took it into a custom rod shop because the gauges did not work. Long story made short. I got just a few miles away from the shop and the gauges went dead again. The rod shop said that I needed a stronger dash regulator. I have not been able to find anything to replace it. Any help would be appreciated. It’s hard to diagnose an electrical issue without more discussion, but here’s what I’d suggest.

Sep 02, · Re: 36v Battery Gauge/Volt Meter Problem sounds like you are onto it then. Try grounding # 4 as you say, and then taking the wire you have runninjg to the positive of the battery pack, and hooking that to the blue wire on the key switch.
But if you insist on using an amp meter, here’s the information. The most important feature of the amp meter is that it is a low resistance high current device. It must be installed in series with an electrical load to limit current flow. If you were to wire the amp meter directly across the battery as you would with a volt meter the amp meter would immediately pass so much current as to fry the meter, almost instantly.
Some amp meters may actually be fused for internal protection. When properly wired in series with an electrical load the amp meter will monitor the current flowing in the circuit. This particular ammeter appears to be manufacture, so not exactly the correct period for MGA. However, since the ammeter was never standard equipment on the MGA, an aftermarket accessory could be almost any design hopfully not ugly.

Hi, all, I have a gauge question. In my ’55 CJ5, I have the speedo shown at the bottom of this link: I am getting ready to wire it up on 12 volts, but I don’t know if the gauges are set up for 12 volts. Is there an easy way to tell? I have access to every kind of electrical test equipment, including variable power supplies, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc. If they are 6 volts, I will just build a regulator into the speedo housing.

The table above only lists the AWG standard. Use the table as a guide. The weight of the wire is critical in some applications; for example, aircraft cabling. The current rating is listed based on permissible voltage drop and not conductor heating. The ability of a wire to carry a given amount of current is affected by a number of additional factors, which are not accounted for in the AWG table above.
The ambient temperature of the surrounding air, wire insulation, and number of other wires bundled together [provided below]. Ampacity relates to the ability of the conductor to carry current [amps] before the cable over heats. I understand there are hundreds of Ampacity tables for many different conditions. The numbers above are but one example.

If provoked, the monster will jump out and bite them. The fuel gauge is not one to be afraid of and most problems can be solved with the proper ammunition! We have received many calls on fuel gauge issues we thought it would be a good idea to provide our readers with the basic knowledge of the fuel level circuit and testing procedures. See Photo A — touch the black lead to the sender housing and the red lead to the sender post and move the float up and down to see what the ohms are on empty and full.
If you do not have the sender out of the fuel tank, GM used a tan wire from the tank to the fuse box and the signal can be picked up there. Do not confuse the tan wire with the light brown wire GM used for the license plate lamp.
May 08, · Make sure that you connect the positive side of the gauge to a switched 12v source, not direct to the battery. I don’t have any experience with a car set up like that, but I know for a fact that if you leave the voltmeter “ON” overnight on a C, it will flatten the battery.
It’s the way folks wire them that’s the hazard, IMO. Fusable link will help. I’ve never in my life had a properly wires amp meter cause a “melt-down”, the factory gauge is wired the same as aftermarket should be so what’s the difference? The person wiring it AND perhaps the gauge of the wires being used. Too often folks don’t keep in mind – the full force of whatever your accessories can pull, or the alternator can push, must go through those wires! Again, too many folks wire those wrong, too, and then they don’t tell the story they should.
And use a fusable link! Don’t cut any factory wires. All of my tractors have had amp gauges, my cars often have I rely on guages, I don’t like idiot lights and since the early 70’s when I first started owning and driving cars, I gotta say, never seen one give out yet!

Two-contact test lights[ edit ] A voltage tester with three lamps to give an approximate indication of voltage magnitude The test light is an electric lamp connected with one or two insulated wire leads. By connecting the flying lead to an earth ground reference and touching the screwdriver tip to various points in the circuit, the presence or absence of voltage at each point can be determined, allowing simple faults to be detected and traced to their root cause.
For higher voltages, a statiscope consisting of a neon glow tube mounted on a long insulating handle can be used to detect AC voltages of volts or more. For low voltage work for example, in automobiles , the lamp used is usually a small, low-voltage incandescent light bulb. These lamps usually are designed to operate on approximately 12 V; application of an automotive test lamp on mains voltage will destroy the lamp and may cause a short-circuit fault in the tester.
For line voltage mains work, the lamp is usually a small neon lamp connected in series with an appropriate ballast resistor. These lamps often can operate across a wide range of voltages from 90V up to several hundred volts. In some cases, several separate lamps are used with resistive voltage dividers arranged to allow additional lamps to strike as the applied voltage rises higher. The lamps are mounted in order from lowest voltage to highest, this minimal bar graph providing a crude indication of voltage.
Incandescent bulbs may also be used in some electronic equipment repair, and a trained technician can usually tell the approximate voltage by using the brightness as a crude indicator. Safety[ edit ] A hand-held test lamp necessarily puts the user in proximity to live circuits. Accidental contact with live wiring can result in a short circuit or electric shock. Inexpensive or home-made test lamps may not include sufficient protection against high-energy faults.
It is customary to connect a test lamp to a known live circuit both before and after testing an unknown circuit, to check for failure of the test lamp itself.

Installing a Battery Charge Indicator on a Golf Cart Posted on by Michael Williams Battery charge indicators BCI are great simple gauges which measure battery voltage to provide an estimate to the user of how much range you have left. Range, as pertaining to an electric golf cart, is defined as the total distance you can travel on a single charge. There are two basic types of battery charge indicators commonly used in the golf cart and electric vehicle community.
An analog gauge is a very simple, basic gauge which uses voltage to move a needle across a background indicator to reveal the state of charge. They appear very similar to a typical gas gauge on an automobile. More LED bars indicate a greater level of charge, while fewer bars indicate less charge. Most analog battery charge indicators are very simple to install on a wide variety of electric golf carts. They normally have two power connection terminals per gauge.

For example, if one were using a foot cable to power a V device that required 10 amps, the cable would drop about 10 volts, leaving for the device. If instead the supply was 12 volts, having the cable drop ten volts would leave only two volts available for the load. In effect, a higher voltage permits a thinner wire, for a given current. But only where a long run would require that the wire be oversized in the first place.
To oversimplify, voltage can be easily converted to current, and vice versa. So by increasing the voltage, you can reduce the conductor size.

Trick question, it is not possible to put a resistor in ‘backwards’.
However there are no instructions with it about how to hook up, what the voltage of the bulbs is, AC or DC. Went to the MTH website but could not find any help about wiring other than the bulbs might be volt .
It used to be common to install an amp meter in an MGA back in the day , but unless you are in search of some unusual information you may be better served with a volt meter. A dash mounted volt meter will be used to monitor electrical system voltage as you drive. The car battery tends to dampen system voltage swings, generally well within a range of 8 to 16 volts for a nominal 12 volt system.
So to have the best meter reading you would want a dash mounted volt meter with dial range of 8 to 16 volts give or take a bit , not a 0 to 20 volt meter. The volt meter is a high resistance low current device which can be connected directly across the battery. In practice you can connect the earth side of the volt meter to any convenient chassis ground point. It is a good idea to connect the signal side of the volt meter to a circuit which is switched by the ignition switch, so it will be disconnected from the battery when the car is parked.
It is convient to connect it to the output side of the ignition switch. If you get it wrong the meter will peg on zero with power on.

If the gas pressure is reduced the number of molecules present will fall proportionately and the wire will lose heat more slowly. Measuring the heat loss is an indirect indication of pressure. There are three possible schemes that can be done. In many systems, the wire is maintained at a constant resistance R by controlling the voltage I through the wire.
The resistance can be set using a bridge circuit.

Even your link says W with typical being watts. I have yet to see a typical full-sized electric dryer that required less than a 30A circuit. But since the original question didn’t specify the wattage, it’s hard to give a definitive answer. Better to show the method. Most dryers demand a dedicated 30A circuit. If they don’t actually draw 30A, they require a de-rate that requires you to compute load as if they do.
That’s because they are engineered to the alllowed limits of a 30A circuit – makers would prefer to go higher still, because even at 30A they are slow to dry compared to gas. Your thoroughness is admirable, but please! Recompute for an honest W V x 30A.
