Development[ edit ] The area that today comprises the neighborhood of Park Slope was first inhabited by the Native Americans of the Lenape people. The Dutch colonized the area by the 17th century and farmed the region for more than years. In this battle, over 10, British soldiers and Hessian mercenaries routed outnumbered American forces. The historic site of Battle Pass is now preserved in Prospect Park, and on Fifth Avenue there is a reconstruction of the stone farmhouse where a countercharge covered the American retreat. In the s, a local lawyer and railroad developer named Edwin Clarke Litchfield — purchased large tracts of what was then farmland. Through the American Civil War era, he sold off much of his land to residential developers. During the s, the City of Brooklyn purchased his estate and adjoining property to complete the West Drive and the southern portion of the Long Meadow in Prospect Park. By the late s, with horse-drawn rail cars running to the park and the ferry, bringing many rich New Yorkers in the process, urban sprawl dramatically changed the neighborhood into a streetcar suburb. Many of the large Victorian mansions on Prospect Park West, known as the Gold Coast, were built in the s and s to take advantage of the beautiful park views.

Discarded wood turns into radiant wall space. And old warehouses are repurposed as cafes, community centers, and music venues. Often compared to a seaside village rather than a big-city destination, Red Hook’s peeling paint and washed-up-on-the-shore aesthetic remind of times passed. Loved the local swimming pool and the great cafes and bars close by. Red Hook is just over the water from Manhattan and combines an interesting mix of portside ‘industria’ with public housing and the artsy middle class.

It’s one of the many reasons the neighborhood appeals to a resident artistic community.

But we also don’t do crowds. There are only three campgrounds in Sequoia with dump station and none with water or electric hook ups. Stony Creek has neither. But it is a few miles north of Lodgepole and nestled on the banks of Stony Creek, hence the name. We have camped here previously in tent and had enjoyed our stay so we decided to go back in the trailer. There was a creek about 20 feet from our trailer and we could hear running water at all times.

We saw a few gazelle and a buck next to our camp site. One night a bear got in to the trash bins on the campground. This is a not a site for those who don’t want to store their food in the bear lockers. Camp host was very nice and friendly.

Print The request was simple. There are few clues as to who wrote it or what type of person they are. Whoever the author or whatever the ask, Rev. Once a day, he checks the box next to the church steps and carries the prayers of New Yorkers—believers and atheists alike—to the altar of the year-old building. There, he petitions God on their behalf for miraculous intervention.

Oct 14,  · Park Slope it’s beautiful area in Brooklyn. It’s nice to walk around the streets. Great restaurants in the area, also parking garage near the main streets.

This park was built before slides and now they have marked out narrow sites with white lines that you are expected to stay between. The fire department requires some magic distance away from the 30 amp electric socket. After getting read the riot act, very nicely, I might add, when checking in, we still ended up in a fierce argument with her when she found we were too much over the line. After I threatened to check every RV in the park to make sure they were in the lines, she gave us a few inches of leeway.

She has a truly lousy job. Thousand Trails should be ashamed of themselves. RV’s with slides should not be allowed and at 42′, our MH leaves our Jeep out in the road, but somehow that’s ok. You also park opposite your neighbor. We test the water. Decent tap water ppm and fairly soft. Thousand Trails is two for two with us so far – two losers.

A wonderful little French-Italian bistro. The Absolute Best 1. Taormina does right by the classics, too: Though the most interesting part about the space is that it was, for years, the studio of unjustly obscure artist Leo J. Banks, the corner front is light and airy during the day and cozy at night.

The end result, 4ave in Park Slope got a little damaged and 9st. The amount of snow from Blizzards were increasing from years ago. I used to see people ski up and down Park Slope.

The building at 2nd Street before its renovation. Courtesy Sugar Hill Capital Partners For years, a dilapidated apartment building dominated the corner of Seventh Avenue and Second Street in Park Slope—seemingly one of the only rundown buildings left behind as the neighborhood rapidly gentrified. That changed back in , when developer Sugar Hill Capital Partners announced its plan to convert it to luxury condos after purchasing the building in foreclosure.

What followed was an intensive gut renovation that stripped the historic building down to the studs, restored much of the facade, and outfitted each of the four levels with luxury floor-through condos. The NADA team faced the very daunting task of cleaning the building out and stabilizing it for further construction. For years the building had been neglected by its eccentric owner, who rented out apartments here and ran a bar from the ground floor decades ago, before Park Slope gentrified.

NADA started on the facade, restoring as much as possible. Graffiti and paint were removed from the brickwork, and the cornice was repaired and painted black to match the new turret. Interior renovations began in the summer of and lasted about six months. Each of the four full-floor apartment have similar floorplans with direct elevator access and a small foyer that opens into a foot-long combined living area, dining area and kitchen.

A hallway from the living area leads to three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a bay window in the master. All the new windows are environmentally sustainable, selected to reduce incoming sunlight and energy costs, and are decked out with electrically-operated shades. After a false start launching sales mid-construction, Douglas Elliman is now handling listings. Douglas Elliman will move its Park Slope office into the ground-floor commercial unit.

Pop-Up Soup In Park Slope Last summer, a friend of mine suggested, as a way to stave off depression while writing this blog, that I rename is “Found City” and write instead about great new things in New York, rather than the great old things New York was losing. Well, I’m not changing the name of the blog, or it’s mission. But he had a point. Not everything old was good.

Mayor Bill de Blasio approved the plan for District 15 in Park Slope and announced a new initiative to help other districts follow in the same footsteps. It felt like a Park Slope pep-rally at Middle School Two similar announcements to eliminate Middle School screening on the Lower East Side and Upper West Side didn’t receive a fraction of the fanfare as they were announced in an e-mail. But the Mayor returned to his old neighborhood for the latest announcement, applauding the parent-led movement as he brushed back concerns about integration.

Some parents had pushed back on the plan, raising concerns that the change would strain resources that have helped their children succeed academically. If that was the case then New York City would not be the successful city that it is because we are diverse.
