Duggan’s Temperance Hotel now called The Cemlyn was built in Many of the buildings on High Street have been restored as part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative , with some brought back from the brink of extinction.
The streetscape was also renewed with more importance given to pedestrians. Over the years, several buildings along this street have unfortunately been lost, although replacement buildings have been designed to complement the existing buildings and incorporate features characteristic of the area. Along High Street, a variety of architectural features can be seen, such as balconies, verandas, ornate fascias, timber framed facades, ornate finials and Flemish bond brickwork.
All these features create the impression of a once impressive parade with a grand sense of style. It was formerly a coaching inn, known as the Llanerchydirion Inn. Lying close to the turnpike road, which ran across the moor between Builth and Penybont, the Llanerch was one of the few places offering accommodation at this time. In the 18th Century, there was no town of Llandrindod Wells, not even a village.
The roads through the area were notoriously bad and in many places little better than tracks.

His remains are buried at nearby Abbey Cwm Hir where there is also an unusual historic mansion house worthy of a visit. Builth Wells 8 miles – Rhayader 12 miles Llandrindod Wells as its name implies, was historically linked with the health-giving waters which it still provides for visitors today. It is therefore surprising to find that, although the beneficial effects of taking the waters were known to the Romans, the development of the town did not take off until the mid- 19th Century with the coming of the railway to the town.
It then grew at an astonishing rate, as the taking of the waters became a fashionable part of Victorian life. The best known Roman settlement in the area was situated at Castell Collen, just outside Llandrindod Wells, and today it is an important archaeological site. Although the health-giving benefits of the many types of waters coming from local springs were well known to the Romans, it was not until the end of the 17th Century that the saline springs were mentioned in local reports from the area.
Even then, no development of note followed. At that time, Llandrindod Wells did not exist as a town, and the area comprised just a few scattered farming communities, the Llanerch Inn, Caebach Chapel and two 13th Century churches which still see regular worship.
